Born and brought up in York, England, Peter Hull developed his artistic abilities at York School of Arts and Crafts where he attended a three-year fine art and graphics course. On completing this he was offered a place on a one-year course studying advanced typography at the London College of Printing. Over the following years Peter worked for various employers as a graphic artist and illustrator, becoming a Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers during that time. Eventually he left England to live in France, where he worked for many years as a freelance graphic artist and illustrator. Within a year of his arrival in France he was accepted as a member of the prestigious La Maison des Artistes.
Peter Hull’s influences are many, ranging from the American artists Warhol, Hopper and Wyeth to the British political cartoonists Peter Brookes and Dave Brown. He has a great admiration for the English painters Turner and Constable, mainly because they undoubtedly laid the roots from which grew the spirited freedom of the French Impressionists. Peter doesn’t pursue a particular style, preferring to vary his approach depending on what he wants to paint or draw.
